Brigg Fair
Oil on canvas
1984

"Do you have a favourite painting?" "Yes, it's Brigg Fair!"

I adore Delius's music, and I always wanted to make a piece of work last as long as a piece of music. This Piece of music lasts about 22 minutes. Delius alights from the train with his wife Jelka. They move through Brigg. A horse fair and a hiring fair also. Labourers plying for work mix with women selling country fare. Onto the large house where Percy Grainger takes down a song from the gamekeeper - words and notes that Delius would make into that piece of music. Round to the Lincolnshire skyline that holds the finale to the music and picture, a peel of bells from a distant church.

Crapper and Haigh on York Street
Oil on canvas
1972

Let me tell you a little story. It's Christmas and I haven't sold a picture in weeks; no presents, no turkey and next year looks bleak - altogether now Ahhh! When in walks Father Christmas and buys three paintings- altogether now Hurray! It wasn't him, but a man whom I've come to know and respect for his genial outlook on life - Mr Patrick Crapper. The Commission shows the young Patrick at his first day on York Street in his standard 8. I applaud here the doggedness of the individual. And he is one!

The Sheffield Gang Wars
Oil on canvas
1983

The Gang Wars are a part of Sheffield's late history which have gone into legend - nearly everybody knew somebody who was involved. The painting follows two stories that run parallel. Sheffield United return to the City after winning the F.A. Cup. Home like heroes to a civic welcome and rapturous applause. However, a new story is gathering pace to burst on the scene and spell the end of the gang warfare; the murder of Jock Plommer. The trial and later, a double hanging, marked a dark period in our past.

Horse Fair at Appleby
Oil on canvas
1985

It is purely and simply - a horse fair. For a few days, there's more hand slapping and cash passing than you will ever see. The River Eden provides a washing spot for the horses, washed in liquid soap and trotted trotted through the deep waters which are Guinness brown from the Cumberland peat. The gypsy children jump into the water from the bridge for the sheer hell of it. Always a little bit of bother, but it's a bit of England that's being lost. The colours are softer with no hint of 'theatrical red'.
