The work of Trevor Neal can be loosely divided into four groups.

1 – Personal Work. Drawing heavily on the Antique, showing architecture, ancient interiors, exotic furniture, rendered in a manner where the effects of time and the elements have taken their toll.

2 – The Naked Human Form. In a variety of media, many of the techniques used on the substrates imply an ageing that is contradictory to the well-toned bodies of the sitters.

3 – Landscapes. Throughout the ages travel has always inspired, I am no exception, whether home or abroad I seem to see more, be more receptive to the unfamiliar.

4 – Commissioned Works. Whilst most of my collaborations in this field have been in the form of interpretative portraiture, I have often been asked to put my imagination to work on such diverse subjects as family groups, cars, boats, album sleeves for rock bands to brass bands, bathrooms, horses, interiors and exteriors.

Yvonne Oates is an artist who lives and works in Buxton.

She started painting about 10 years ago when she gave up her career in education and moved to the Peak District. She is largely self-taught, but enjoys the stimulation of attending a variety of art courses.

Yvonne paints mainly in watercolour, but also produces work in oils and pastels.
Recently, she has been developing the use of collage with watercolour, and enjoying its more textural and abstract results. She paints a variety of subjects – usually atmospheric scenes discovered on walks around the Peak District or Lake District – and finds inspiration in the interplay of light and colour.

Her paintings have been exhibited and sold in a number of galleries throughout the area and are held in private collections throughout the world, including the USA, Australia and South Africa.
She is a founder member of the High Peak Artists’ and Craft Workers’ Association and has exhibited at the Pump Room in Buxton for the past 8 years.

She exhibits at the “Artist and Designers Fairs” held in Buxton.

Tim Rose is an artist who works in watercolour, oils and acrylics. His subjects range from architectural studies of cathedrals to paintings of country house gardens. Lighting and illumination are of the essence in his pictures and he works outside (or from on-the-spot sketches) throughout the year; feeling that one can only know one’s subject from having observed it through subtle changes of light and atmoshphere.

Good draughsmanship is very important in his paintings and his drawings and sketches are sought after as much as his pictures.

Tim exhibits widely throughout the country, most notably at the Bankside Gallery (home of the Royal Watercolour Society). He is commissioned by corporate, commercial and private clients nationwide – and these vary from oil paintings of power stations to portraits of corporate headquarters. Much of his work is reproduced as cards and prints.

Terry has seen many changes in Sheffield over the years and has specialised in recreating nostalgic scenes of the city.

He has become one of the area’s leading artists with an extensive series of prints and limited editions of the major landmarks in Sheffield, most of which carry his three trademarks. They are a Sheffield Star newspaper seller, a Sheffield United supporter and a black cat.

Some of the most popular prints include modern views of Bramall Lane, home of Sheffield United and Hillsborough, home of Sheffield Wednesday. One of his most recent prints titled “Ancient and Modern” is more contemporary and depicts the city’s Supertrams passing in front of the Anglican cathedral.

Watercolour is a very popular medium, but because so many amateur painters used it in the latter half of the 19th century we tend to conjure up a mental picture of genteel ladies sitting at summer easels painting timid and delicate Water Colour landscapes. An impression forms of an occupation similar to that of flower arranging.

However, artists like Sheila Gill of Newbold, Chesterfield, regard it completely differently, exploiting watercolour in its many forms, fascinated by its possibilities and highly expert in her craft. She produces works of a startling luminosity, with the freshness and colour that we tend to associate with oil paints.

In 1999 Sheila won the premier award in ITV’s sadly missed Watercolour Challenge. She now works as a full-time painter, her work has earned her a number of ‘highly commended’ awards, and she has become a member of the Society of Floral Painters.

Flowers as a subject, though, have been joined by landscapes and animals.

“I’ve always loved gardening,” explains Sheila, “and flower-painting was a natural extension of this passion. But the beauty of the Derbyshire landscape, particularly the White Peak, begs to be painted, and I spend a lot of time working outdoors.

“I’m inordinately fond of Venice, and I’ve worked there a couple of times. As for animals, I love cats. Unfortunately, my son’s allergic to them, so I use next door’s resident feline Barney as a model.”

As a textile artist, I use a variety of media in my work including paper, felt, metal and plastic. I combine free machine embroidery with hand stitching and enjoy experimenting with fabric manipulation techniques and using unlikely materials such as wire and paper beads.

My inspiration is drawn from many sources, japanese symbolism to Stone Age cultures. My work is mainly abstract, often three dimensional, but can be landscape and gardens.

Recent work combines transparent organdies and orgazas and very basic stitchery. I am working on making sculptural pieces using wire and plastic tubing, producing both 3D and wall hung pieces.

I have exhibited and sold work nationally – and also work to commission.

Both went from Chesterfield art college to Staffordshire University and gained 1st class degrees in Surface Pattern design.

Since then we have continued to develop our individual strengths, I am most happy simply sketching with my pencil and Kate loves combining colour and pattern, layering and creating decorative surfaces.

We never set out to work together but as briefs came in, we found that our styles bound together created something very quirky and unique!

Kate loves charity shops, she is always on the search for vintage fabrics & unusual papers, and my inspirations come from simple things in life like an old post office sign or a twisted toothpaste tube!

Over the years we have illustrated Children’s books together, developed card ranges, stationary, art prints….and occasionally go our seperate ways with one off pieces for local galleries and exhibitions.

But we still love the surprise of how a piece can turn out when it’s had a little bit of each other thrown in!

Hazel is an artist who is attracted to themes which allow her to break free of outline with energy and capture her imagination.

It is not so much the subject, but the light falling on pattern, a gesture, a discordant colour and a memory which fits in with a fleeting image.

Figurative work, flowers, street scenes, animals birds which allows her to play with colour are all subjects she considers. The challenge of landscapes is also tackled

Recent travels to other counties have provided Hazel with an enormous amount of inspirational materials. Colour, buildings, watching people interacting with their environment are all wonderful sources of material for paintings.

Hazel’s studio adjoins the cottage where she lives and this is where she gives art lessons and workshops throughout the year (for all levels of ability in a variety of subjects).

Having entered the world of professional painting after a successful career in marketing, Geoff Kersey works both outdoors and from his studio at his home in Darley Dale, where he draws inspiration from the surrounding Peak District landscape in all seasons, in addition to traveling further afield from time to time to paint other favorite areas like Norfolk, Cumbria and parts of Suffolk.

Geoff also enjoys teaching painting and is pursuing this aspect of his work, setting up courses for beginners and improvers in the Derbyshire and Sheffield area.
A self-taught artist he believes watercolour is at its best when painted spontaneously and instinctively with a carefully selected palette of colours, concentrating on capturing the essence and atmosphere of the subject with the emphasis on light.

The Peak District provides a rich variety of rural landscapes, ideally suited to the watercolour painter’s palette. All Geoff’s paintings are produced on the finest watercolour papers and presented in acid-free mounts (frames are not included).

The paintings depict the Peak District’s variety of dales, peaks, valleys, farms, rivers and rich heritage, both rural and industrial, with that loose atmospheric quality for which watercolour is an ideal painting medium.

Geoff is happy to take watercolour painting commissions, not just of the Peak District, but of other locations in the British Isles.

I eventually went on to Rotherham Art College, inspirational perhaps but not practical enough for my liking so I left to start that sometimes winding road to becoming an artist and to teach myself on the way.

As I look back I put my success down to those early days, because if you’re not determined you will never succeed. My subject matter ranges from figurative to marine to landscape and my tastes range from the traditional to the contemporary, if I can incorporate a storyline so much the better.

I think one can learn from other artists as well.
